I Believe I can Flaaaaaaaay

Masthead: the masthead is Sports Illustrated in orange block letters which means it combines the energy of red and the happiness of yellow. It is associated with joy, sunshine, and the tropics. Orange represents enthusiasm, fascination, happiness, creativity, determination, attraction, success, encouragement, and stimulation .And has very high visibility, so you can use it to catch attention and highlight the most important elements of the text.

To the human eye, orange is a very hot color, so it gives the sensation of heat. Nevertheless, orange is not as aggressive as red. orange is symbolic of strength and endurance .Orange relates to 'gut reaction' or our gut instincts, as opposed to the physical reaction of red or the mental reaction of yellow. It offers emotional strength in difficult times. It helps us to bounce back from disappointments and despair, assisting in recovery from grief. Orange brings spontaneity and a positive outlook on life and is a great color to use during tough times, keeping us motivated and helping us to look on the bright side of life.In relation to the meaning of colors, orange is extroverted and uninhibited, often encouraging exhibitionism or, at the very least, showing-off! like the main image .The text of the masthead is in block letters which means that they are big , powerful , dominant and etc.

Main Image: The main image is Kevin Durant himself with a white towel on his head and lifting up his both arms in the middle of front cover of the magazine . Surrounded by the anchorage text behind him with a set of blue quotation mark. He is in his away Oklahoma City Jersey which represents his team with the color blue which is associated with depth and stability. It symbolizes the trust, loyalty, wisdom, confidence, intelligence, faith, truth of Kevin Durant to his team and how he play basketball . It produces a calming effect but in this photo Kevin is not calm, he is celebrating and wild ,contrasting the color to his feelings. Blue is strongly associated with tranquility . In heraldry, blue is used to symbolize piety and sincerity.

His both arms are lifting up to represent wings because he believes he can fly that means in basketball term he can jump higher than everyone else so he can dunk, take a jump shot , rebound and lots more even though he is not that mascular type of player. And there's a white towel in his head to dry up his sweat because he is in the bench to rest for a little bit and the towel is sponsored by Gatorade . The white towel shows the purification of his thoughts and actions , encourages him to clear his mind or any obstacles , and to enables him have a new and fresh beginning in the game . His feelings reflects to the masthead which is aggressive to show how powerful ,strong he is and how strong his fate to fly.

Kevin Durant wears the number 35 in honor of his childhood coach, Charles "Chucky" Craig. Craig was murdered at the age of 35 and Durant has worn that number ever since.

Skyline: There are two different articles in skyline. Both of them has orange small font for heading ,it is orange to show that both articles are relevant to Sports Illustrated and to show importance even though it is in small font . And the subheading is in smaller white font to be seen clearly by the audience . The first article is about Mike Brown and The Cleveland Cavaliers ,and tells about you can't have nice things is about the Cleveland has a lot of super star players and yet they did not get the Championship title in the NBA playoffs last 2007 against the San Antonio Spurs with Coach Gregg Popovich . And the Spurs swept the Cavaliers 4-0, that was not a nice thing for Coach Mike Brown.

And the second article is about Hasheem Thabeet wearing a balloon hat that represents the hat for Drafting in NBA and the Love story represent his relationship to his coach, Coach Cal. The bAlloon hats and nachos emphasizes about his celebration to his NBA drafting .All of the draft sites list Theebz as a surefire Top 5, Top 3 pick. So it's a matter of where he gets drafted instead of if.

Anchorage Text : The Anchorage text is 'I BELIEVE I CAN FLAAAAAAAAAHHH I BELIEVE I CAN TOUCH THE SKY'. With extra large and bright font behind Kevin Durant , to get the attention of the audience not only the fans of Kevin Durant but also the fans of music because the anchorage text is the title and lyrics from the song I Believe I Can Fly. The language that is used in the anchorage text is hyperbolic words for the fly to exaggerated the words to grab the readers attention . And they used the text to emphasize the emotion and the feeling of the main image Kevin Durant. He is in a white towel to dry up his sweat while he is in the bench and to show that he is an American Eagle that is flying . In Reality , he is just soaring his arms out to celebrate and his face reaction is madly happy and he's like singing I belive I can fly. There's a little text in the bottom left corner to show his name and under it describes that he believes he can fly , it is in a small text because the main image already describes whats his doing and there's supporting text behind him , just to show a little description in the bottom left corner.

  1. A good level of analysis, Marc. Have you covered all of the areas related to a magazine front cover? Make sure you relate the layout to the audience. Why would they want to buy this magazine?
